Outline of Research at the Start

天然に存在するビタミンKは、フィロキノン（VK1）とメナキノン類（VK2, MK-n）に大別されるが、高等動物では摂取されたビタミンKの一部が、VK2のひとつであるMK-4へと特異的に変換される。しかし、MK-4の役割、特にMK-4が多量に含まれる大脳、筋肉、腎臓での機能については、ほとんど解明がなされていない。本研究では、我々が見出したMK-4の新しい作用（NFκB活性化抑制、PKA経路活性化）が、老化に伴う認知や運動機能の低下に対して抑制的に作用する機序の解析を通じて、脳、筋肉、腎臓でのビタミンKの生体内変換の意義と加齢に伴う疾病に対してビタミンKがもつ寿命を延伸させる効果を示す。
