Outline of Research at the Start

除菌フィルターを通過するほどに小さな極小微生物群（ウイルスではなく極小細菌群）がさまざまな環境に生息することが確実視されるようになってきたが、数百ナノメートルの極小の細胞であり、また自然環境で優占化しないため、その諸解析が困難である。申請者らは未知・未培養の極小細菌群が活性汚泥（廃水中の有機物を分解する微生物の集まり）に多様かつ安定的に存在することに着眼し、次の3つの課題に取り組む：研究1. 極小微生物群の濃縮と可視化、研究2. 新規な極小微生物の集積培養と多様性解析、研究3. 培養菌株の分類と生態機能の解明。本研究により、微生物新世界と称すべき極小微生物群の多様性に関する基盤的知見を得る。
