Outline of Research at the Start |
This interdisciplinary research will create an original linguistic model to represent lexical fields with musical signs. This model will find application in language didactics, musicology, music therapy, and logopedics and improve bilingual and multicultural communication.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Funds were used for musical equipment and a fieldtrip to conduct interviews and create a linguistic model. There were 178 interviews in 4 languages with people from 23 countries. Participants were asked to associate sounds with words and to give their opinions about the relations between human language and music. Most of the interviews were conducted in Japan. During the fieldtrip in Bulgaria, I visited 10 cities and interviewed 66 people. I also participated in a Workshop “New Linguistic Models in the Human Sciences” at the University of Sofia, consulted non-digitalized sources in Plovdiv National Library. All data collected has been analyzed by a statistician. Using this data, I created a linguistic model that represents lexical fields with music signs.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I made progress on all tasks & collected more data than originally planned. the statistical analysis showed significant dependencies betw. variables. I finalized the work on the linguistic model, which I dubbed linguomusicology. I tested the model while building lexical fields and started work on an open-source program to deploy the matrix. I wrote a chapter for an edited volume about bilingual bicultural societies, related to one of the model’s applications. I started preparing articles on the applications of the linguistic model, the function of the matrix, lexical fields in the matrix and the interviewees' opinions. I applied for 4 intl. conferences. I am teaching a seminar "Different Dimensions of Bilingualism", part of which represents my project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
There is no considerable change to the initial plans. I built the matrix, conducted the interviews, and a professional statistician analyzed the data. I tested the linguistic model and am planning to increase the number of lexical fields by conducting new interviews. I applied for scientific conferences in Spain, Argentina, the U.S.A. and France, most of which I will attend online. My paper for the conference in Barcelona, Spain, in July 2024 was accepted. I started creating a new interview model in Spanish and Catalan languages. I will plan a field trip to Spain once I am sure the conference dates and the participants I am going to interview are available in the same time period. I am planning to submit the articles on which I am working to peer-reviewed journals.
