Outline of Research at the Start |
This project proposes to study the growing cultural and economic significance of Japan’s platform economy from the perspective of the workers drawn to these new and largely unregulated forms of employment. Tokyo-based workers sought to wield the Covid-19 pandemic into an opportunity for collective bargaining with the tech giant, garnering media attention by drawing on a distinctly Japanese repertoire of street protest on behalf of the lumpen ranks of the “precariat.” My ethnography captures the challenges faced by such endeavors to organize gig workers against their algorithmic employers.
