Outline of Research at the Start |
Photosynthesis is the primary process by which oxygen is produced in Earth’s atmosphere. An important step in this complex reaction is an electron transfer mediated by a molecule called plastoquinone, between two light-absorbing proteins present in the cell-membrane of leaves. We aim to study the structural changes of plastoquinone during the electron transfer process, using vibrational and fluorescence spectroscopy at picosecond time scales under native condition. Information on the dynamics of plastoquinone is crucial to develop better chemical systems for artificial photosynthesis.
