Outline of Research at the Start

本研究ではこれまで研究報告数の少ない近赤外シンチレーション特性の評価を行う。シンチレータは放射線を即時に蛍光に変換する材料で、光子を電子に変換する光検出器と組み合わせることで放射線計測に利用でき、医療やセキュリティ分野など応用先は多岐に渡る。従来は主な検出器の感度波長に合わせる形で紫外-青色発光シンチレータが開発されてきたが、近年では放射線治療時の照射線量のリアルタイム観測や廃炉作業時のモニタなど高線量場計測に有用な近赤外発光シンチレータが注目を集めている。X・γ線吸収効率および放射線耐性の観点から既報材料と比較して優位性があるW系材料の開発を行い、近赤外発光中心を導入して発光特性を評価する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では放射線治療時の線量のリアルタイムモニタリングや原子炉周辺、内部のモニタリング等の高線量場計測への応用が期待される、新規重元素系近赤外発光シンチレータの開発を推進している。重元素であるタングステン系の材料の密度、実効原子番号は~7ー8 g/cm3および~60ー80と大きく、X線計測に優位性を持つが、その近赤外領域におけるシンチレーションはこれまで評価されていない。そこで初年度はCaWO4の組成に着目し、そのバルク単結晶の作製と発光中心を導入した際のシンチレーション挙動の評価を試みた。
先ず化合物のストイキオメトリとなるように原料粉末を混合し、十分に焼成することで目的物の多結晶粉末を得た。この多結晶粉末を種結晶として使用して融液成長を行い、透明体のバルク単結晶を得ることに成功した。その後発光中心としてNdやPrを賦活した単結晶の作製を行い、X線照射下、当材料が近赤外領域に明瞭なシンチレーションを示す事を確認し、挙動評価を達成した。

Reason

重元素系近赤外発光シンチレータの開発を目指し、近赤外発光中心を導入したタングステン系単結晶を育成し、その発光特性、放射線応答特性を評価した。Floating Zone法によるサンプル作製を試み、種結晶の焼成条件の検討等を行うことで複数のタングステン系単結晶の作製に成功した。粉末X線回折測定により、得られたサンプルは目的物の単相を有していることを確認した。近赤外領域での発光特性を評価したところ、Ndを発光中心としたサンプルにおいて70%前後の、比較的高いフォトルミネッセンス量子収率が確認された。X線照射線量率と近赤外シンチレーションの関係においては、良好な線形な応答が確認された。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Ndを発光中心として用いることで、良好な発光特性を示す近赤外発光シンチレータが開発された。一方で、高線量場計測への実応用や使用している検出器との組み合わせを考えた際、Ndよりも長波長領域に発光を示す事がシンチレータに望まれ、発光中心の更なる検討の余地が有る。今後はEr等の異なる発光中心を導入したタングステン系単結晶の育成を試み、より高い発光特性、X線検出効率の実現を目指す。
