Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Pigeons were investigated whether they perceived a Kanizsa illusion and a brighter surface in a Kanizsa display. The first experiment in which pigeons were trained to discriminate the brightness of the test patches revealed that the pigeons perceived a darker surface in a typical Kanizsa display, differently from humans. In the second experiment, we investigated whether pigeons perceived clear, subjective contour with Kanizsa displays in a visual search task. The index was a search time benefit, the reduced reaction time on trials in which a target was correctly predicted by the prime. The results shows that the reduction of the search time (an enhancement of the process) synchronously occurred in the conditions in which the target with real contours appeared as a prime and in which the target with illusory contours appeared. In summary, pigeons were suggested to perceive Kanizsa illusions, but in a different way from humans concerning the brightness filling-in.
