Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research considers the role of local and regional office holders in supporting oligarchic self-government as well as that of wealthy farmers (Hausmann) in the east region of the German North Sea coastal areas, mainly the area around the Elbe estuary (chiefly the Land Hadeln), from 1733 to 1852. The three areas discussed here are: 1)The social realities of the office holders and the wealthy farmers, especially the characteristics of their farm and land holdings; 2)The social links and networks among the two groups, as well as between them and the civic middle class; 3)Their participation in the local and regional administration system, particularly the elections of the office holders in the parishes who shouldered the responsibility of self-government for the other inhabitants and the territorial state.
