Eight experiments investigated the association of psychological distance and accessibility of abstract or concrete knowledge. Results showed that both abstract knowledge and concrete knowledge were activated when participants had thought abstractly. Likewise, when participants had thought concretely they activated not only concrete knowledge but also abstract knowledge. In addition, regardless of availability and hierarchy structure of knowledge, the manipulation of construal level or psychological distance had effects on participants’ cognition. It was suggested that the knowledge applicability instead of the knowledge accessibility would trigger the construal level effects.
