Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Ecological aspects of Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) were investigated by studying the microchemistry of otoliths and the parasite fauna as indicators of the life of the species. This study has revealed that Japanese eels prey on a variety of benthic animals including crabs, which serve as the intermediate hosts of the eel stomach nematode (Heliconema anguillae), in brackish waters. Japanese eels from brackish waters were also infected by the gill monogenean (Pseudodactylogyrus kamegaii), which indicates that Japanese eels stably maintain their stocks as the host of the monogenean in brackish waters.
