Research Abstract |
This study identified a target molecule of a regulatory RNA that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carries. The regulatory RNA targets mRNA encoding an essential virulence factor of S. aureus, inhibits its translation, and attenuates S. aureus virulence. This finding suggests a novel molecular mechanism that MRSA decreases the virulence by itself. This study also revealed that MRSA strains that do not express the regulatory RNA cause a severe disease at higher rate than MRSA strains that express the regulatory RNA. This finding suggests that examination of the expression of regulatory RNA is useful to predict the severity of MRSA diseases.
