Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The molecular pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy was investigated based on the inflammatory processes. The inflammatory processes included the interaction among dendritic cells, vitreo-retinal cells and vascular cells, and the inflammatory processes were regulated by inflammatory cytokines including VEGF, TNF-α and others. According to the results of this research, the effects of an anti-inflammatory agent, steroid, on diabetic retinopathy were investigated, and topical steroid treatment was shown to be effective to treat diabetic retinopathy clinically.
