| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this research project, we examined the modernization of Buddhism, focusing on the following aspects ;
(1)Geographical, historical, and political characteristics of the Shin sect in north Kyushu(Fukuoka, Oita, Saga, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto).(2) Chinese learning(Kangaku), with a focus on relations between Shin seminaries and private academies of Kangaku.(3)The anti-Christian polemics of the bakumatsu and Restoration period.(4)The significance of overseas missionary activities in cultural exchange and the modernization of Buddhism.
