Research Abstract |
The present study examined the primary source of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) infection and factors of transmission in physical contact sports. The findings suggest that 17% were persistent nasal carriers and their nasal density of SA colonies were high. Additionally, our findings provided insight into the role played by exercise-induced perspiration on the skin surface in significantly increasing the amount of SA in nasal carriers. Skin surface SA might contribute to transmission among rugby players. Thus, an SA nasal carrier might be a risk factor in physical contact sports.
