Research Abstract

Calumin is a novel ER-resident protein. Disruption of calumin gene in mice causes embryonic lethality, suggesting that calumin plays the indispensable physiological role. But, the physiological role of calumin is not clear.
To maintain ER homeostasis, ER is equipped with ERAD functioning as protein quality control system. This study suggests not only the importance of calumin in ERAD but also the significance of ERAD in visceral endoderm cells functioning as the very few secretory cells around the embryonic day when calumin-knockout mice die.
