Bronchial asthma and COPD are characterized with chronic airway inflammation. To control airway inflammation intervention to individual cytokines or chemokines are now under trial. However, due to its Redundancy of cytokines or chemokines it is very hard to control airway inflammation. Mediators are under the control of transcription factor and intervention to transcription factors may be a breakthrough in disease control. In this research supported by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI), we have found that expression of NRF2(Nuclear factor erythrid-2-related factor 2), a transcription factor for controlling antioxidant production, in bronchial epithelial cells in COPD patients is significantly decreased compared with that of healthy non-smoking healthy subjects for the first time. Also we showed that smoking decreased expression of NRF2 in bronchial epithelial cells.
