Research Abstract |
Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is severe ocular fibrosis, resulting in severe visual loss. Vitreous fluid is thought to be one of important stimulators of the dedifferentiation and proliferation of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. However, the effects of vitreous fluid in RPE cells remain to be clarified. We found that the injured RPE cells show high levels of TGF--Smad signaling activities and that the exposure to vitreous fluid triggers the proliferative response of injured RPE cells through activation of p38 MAPK signaling.
