Research Abstract

Human periodontal ligament cells were exposed to severe hypoxic (O2<0.1%) condition in culture to isolate the stress-enduring cells for bone engineering. Cells survived under this condition for 12 hours showed the high expression of pluripotent stem cell markers as well as mesenchymal stem cell markers, and also displayed the highest pluripotency in vitro. In particular, these surviving cells after re-oxygenation could form abundant calcified-nodules in osteogenic medium. Furthermore, a complex with these stress-enduring cells and fibrin-gel showed the remarkable osteoinducibility in vivo.
