Research Abstract |
Reading comprehension is a complex cognitive task that requires not only syntactic abilities but also vocabulary, knowledge, working memory, attention, etc. The present research explored cognitive abilities that are associated with reading comprehension performance. We examined individual's performances in basic language skills, memory, arithmetic, and attention in addition to a reading comprehension task. Results revealed correlations between reading comprehension performance and working memory capacities. Specifically, the operation span test, a complex working memory task, has a high correlation (r=0.4) with reading comprehension performance. These results suggest that complex working memory subserves reading comprehension.
