Research Abstract |
General anesthetics are shown to induce wide spread apoptosis in the developing brain. We studied if mannitol - erythropoietin (M-Epo) combined administration affords protection against anesthetic-induced neurotoxicity in neonatal rats. We found that Caspase-3 was induced in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus after 6 hour exposure to general anesthetics, meaning apoptosis increasing. Intraperitoneal administration of mannitol and Epo failed to inhibit apoptosis. In anesthetized rats, blood saturation of oxygen did not decreased, but blood concentration of carbon dioxide increased. Our results cannot suggest whether M-Epo is effective or not in inhibiting anesthetic-induced neurotoxicity in immature brain.
