古代マヤ文明のグアテマラ南海岸地方では、文明黎明期から盛期へかけて多くの人々が沿岸部を移動し、様々な文化が接触した。本研究ではこのグアテマラ南海岸を対象に、包括的考古人骨研究、すなわちバイオアーキオロジーによってヒトの移動を研究する。どういうヒトが、どこから、どういうモノを携えてやって来て、どう生きて、どう死を迎え、残された人々は彼/彼女からどういう影響を受けたのか、古代人一人一人の移動にまつわる生と死のライフヒストリーを復元し、ヒトの移動という視点から古代文明の基層形成と発展を研究する。
