稲作史の解明には、時間と空間を網羅したイネと稲作の情報が必要不可欠である。
本研究は、炭化米など、過去に栽培されたイネの遺伝情報や年代情報を取り出す対象に、水田土壌に含まれるイネのプラント・オパールを加えることで、埋蔵文化財調査で検出される水田遺構土壌を「時間と空間の情報を備えたイネ遺物」へと転換し、かつてない悉皆性を備えた、時間と空間を網羅した稲作史研究手法の構築を目指すものである。
