モンゴル高原では、歴史的に大型家畜の去勢オスが役畜として軍事力の基盤を提供してきた。現代の牧畜においても去勢オスの割合は大きい。とりわけ大型家畜の去勢オスの群れは宿営地付近で放牧されないため、人びとはしばしば畜群を見失い、そのたびに＜探索＞に出かけて、しばしば日常的な日帰り放牧よりも時間コストをかけている。これまで等閑視されがちであった宿営地にいない家畜に的をしぼり、その喪失と探索という切り口から、人びとの動物行動学エソロジー的知識を収集するとともに、家畜の自律性に依存する牧畜システムという視点から、遊牧論を再考する。
