Outline of Research at the Start

Here, we hypothesize that the origins of major cell structures and metabolisms coincided and triggered major evolutionary transitions in Bacteria. We propose to implement cutting-edge bioinformatic, microscopic, and cultivation techniques to (i) resolve the unknown cell structures of bacterial lineages in key phylogenetic positions, (ii) reconstruct evolutionary histories of bacterial cell structure, respiration, photosynthesis and their connections, and (iii) uncover fundamental synergies of cell structure and the above metabolisms using new cultures of respiratory and phototrophic bacteria.
