地産地消や健康志向の高まりとともに地域多様性が大きい在来作物の価値が評価される中、在来作物の保存と掘り起こしは喫要な課題となっている。
鹿児島県内全市町村の100系統を越える地域在来品種について調査・収集を行った結果、ほぼ全ての地域において地域在来品種は商用品種に置き換わっており、在来品種が残っていた集落においても多くは高齢者が自家採種等で細々と継承しているにとどまっていた。このように、長い歴史を通して地域の食文化や人々の生活を支えた在来作物には文化財的側面が認められ、これら在来作物を物語とともに通時的に後世に伝え残す必要がある。
