Outline of Research at the Start

日本の旧石器時代の編年研究は火山灰に基づくところが大きい。しかし、日本列島のほとんどの地域では良好な火山灰の堆積がなく、理想的な編年の構築が困難である。そこで、本研究では、遺跡出土炭化物の年代測定等を通じてローム層の堆積が薄い環境でも有効な発掘方法と編年構築法を検討する。特にこれまで不明確であった後期旧石器時代以前の遺跡を具体的に調査し、その実態を明らかにする。また、多数の遺構が確認された荒屋遺跡の事例から詳細な遺構の構築と埋没のプロセスを明らかにする。さらに縄文時代に向けての各遺跡の年代を正確に特定し、これまでに蓄積された年代データを総合し、主に東北日本の旧石器編年を提示する。
