Outline of Research at the Start

The purpose of the research is to better understand the timing and reasons for the formation of the great barrier reef using geochemical analyses and fossil assemblages from sediment cores obtained from the continental slope, seaward of the Great Barrier Reef. This work also considers changes in the Pacific western boundary currents and how that would have affected reef development. Because the age of the reef cannot be determined by radiometric dating, this work is using an indirect, sedimentological approach
