Outline of Research at the Start |
Turbulent-like states induced by fluid interactions with beds of slender filaments affect diverse natural processes, from terrestrial/aquatic systems to mucus clearance by cilia. The project member’s expertise in turbulence, microfluidics, complex fluids and numerical simulation, will reveal how canopy turbulence is modified by fluid properties and system size. We will generate predictive phase diagrams for these flows and reveal how the onset of turbulence enhances transport across the canopy interface. Results will be applicable to porous media flow, coastal engineering, biotechnology, etc.
