Outline of Research at the Start

糖尿病のかゆみの原因は、乾燥による肌荒れ(ドライスキン)によると考えられてきた。しかし、ドライスキンのかゆみの原因といわれる病理「表皮内神経密度の増生」は、糖尿病で高頻度に合併する末梢神経障害において、感覚鈍麻の進行に伴い観察される「表皮内神経密度の減少」と180度異なる。
そこで申請者は、『末梢神経の減少に伴い感覚鈍麻が頻発する糖尿病において、なぜ強いかゆみが起こるのか?』という疑問の解決に向け、感覚鈍麻とかゆみの亢進を併発するI型糖尿病掻痒モデルを確立した。
本研究では同モデルを用いてこの矛盾ともとれる現象のメカニズムを明らかにし、糖尿病患者における難治性かゆみの治療法の開発を目指す。
