Outline of Research at the Start

This research aims to examine three main aspects of Australian Asia-Pacific studies. Firstly, it will investigate the formation and growth of area studies as a global phenomenon. Secondly, it will explore how Australia's unique geopolitical situation has influenced the development of these studies. Finally, it will investigate how Australia's changing self-perceptions have shaped its approach to Asia-Pacific studies, and vice versa. In so doing, it presents a global history of Australian area studies, moving away from a US-centric view.
