本研究では、哲学的急進派（古典的功利主義者）のジェイムズ・ミル、ジョン・オースティン、ジョージ・グロートの知的営為を、その主権論と歴史論の連関に着目して分析する。この３者を中心とした古典的功利主義者の議論を、ジェイムズ・ミルを中心とした思想的・人的ネットワークという枠組みの中で捉え、様々な思想家によって担われた多様な諸理論からなる包括的な知の複合体としての古典的功利主義の多様性と統一性を明らかにする。
