Outline of Research at the Start	菅原精造はフランスの空間芸術家たちに漆芸と彫刻を教え、特にアイリーン・グレイと共に制作し、先鋭的な住宅建築E.1027にも影響を与えた。稲垣吉蔵もグレイの空間芸術に協働し、またオーギュスト・ロダンに依頼されて木製台を制作し、ロダンの活動を支えもした。菅原と稲垣は東京美術学校で美術を総合的に学び、近代日本が他国に比肩しようとする試みに応える「美術家」であった。しかし、現在、彼らは欧米において「職人」とのみ解釈されている。近年、新たに発見された菅原と稲垣の作品を国内外において調査し、欧州の芸術家たちが彼らとの協働を熱望した理由を解明し、20世紀の空間芸術における日本美術の新たな視座を開示したい。
