Outline of Research at the Start	19世紀末から戦前にかけて、米国のコレクターたちは日本の美術工芸品に魅せられ熱心に作品を収集し、その多くは後に美術館に移管された。中西部に位置するシカゴ美術館（開館年：1879年）・ミネアポリス美術館（開館年：1883年）・デトロイト美術館（開館年：1885年）・クリーブランド美術館（開館年：1913年）には日本仏教美術史において重要な位置づけとなる仏像や仏画、仏具が多数収蔵されているが、これら仏教美術品の詳細はもとより、販売に携わった日米の古美術商を特定し、流出元の寺院を推察する。本研究では、日本の仏教と仏教美術がアメリカで受け入れられた諸相を実作品とアーカイヴスより調査研究する。
