Outline of Research at the Start	17世紀前半に創業が遡る京焼で最も古い粟田焼の作品研究は、ほどんど行われてこなかった。最盛期である18世紀前期から中期にかけて、京焼から印の消えてしまう時期だからである。現在「古清水」と総称される無印の京焼の大半は粟田焼と考えられるが、その年代を明確にする手段は日本にない。だが米国ボストン美術館や英国メイドストーン博物館・大英博物館などには、無印の京焼と18世紀後期から19世紀の粟田焼の窯場印をもつ作品が大量に残る。これらを調査し、国内の出土遺物や文献史料と対照させ、製作の京焼年代と窯場の変遷を明確する。江戸時代の粟田焼を美術工芸史上に位置づけ、京焼の通史を完成させることを目的とする。
