Outline of Research at the Start	ヘンリー・カウエルはアメリカ20世紀前衛音楽のパイオニアであり、その音楽は日本をはじめとする多様な文化から強い影響を受けている。カウエル作品の演奏、分析、調査を通して、日本との関係の深さが明らかになった。さらに、在米の日本人との直接的な関わりが、カウエル音楽における前衛性の土台を作り上げたとわかった。他文化への理解がカウエルに自由性をもたらし、実験的な精神を解放したのである。本研究では20世紀の音楽文化交流の一潮流の理解に向けて、西洋音楽が模索した「前衛」の意識の中に、明らかに「日本」が存在することを確認し、カウエルと日本文化が相互に受容し培った音楽形成を探求することを目指す。
