Outline of Research at the Start	明治期の日本における科学知のトランスカルチュラルな生成過程を明らかにすることが、本研究課題の目的である。具体的には、当時先端的な研究領域だった海洋生物研究に着目し、後発の日本の研究機関が国際的な研究拠点として急速に台頭する過程を検証することで、間文化交渉のプロセスを介して新たな学知が創造されるダイナミズムを解明する。研究方法としては、日本や欧米各国等の複数の知的伝統が邂逅・衝突した社会空間をコンタクト・ゾーンと位置付け、その領域固有のローカリティ（政治的・社会的・経済的・文化的特性）が科学知の生成をどう規定したのかを検証する。
