Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、20世紀前半に中国・台湾で日本人地質学者が行った地質学的調査に関する基礎的な事実を明確化し、その学術的・政治的意味の検討を試みるものである。これまで様々な学問分野について「帝国日本」の科学史研究が進められてきたが、植民地経営に重要であった鉱産資源調査やそれに関連する地質調査についての研究は乏しい。本研究では、その欠落を埋めるものである。東京地学協会、満鉄地質調査所、台湾総督府、台北帝大などによる地質学的調査の実態を実証的に明らかにするのみならず、日本・欧米・中国・台湾の地質学的「知」から調査への影響、調査結果の地質学的「知」への影響、中国・台湾の土着の知と調査との関係も考察する。
