Outline of Research at the Start	上代から伝えられ現在も全国的に認知度が高いことから、浦島伝説とは日本文化を解明するための有効な指標となる。「龍宮」という海洋の異界が本伝説の特徴のひとつとなる。そこで、本伝説の舞台である日本海の海洋文化圏の理想郷と、それ以外の太平洋などの海洋文化圏の文学に叙述されている異界の理想郷とを対比して、文学作品から浮上する日本本土の宗教文化を解明する。ニライカナイとの対比分析や、江戸時代の浦島伝説の享受の実態解明という未解決の課題を遂行する。それによって、なぜ浦島伝説が近世に愛好され、大衆化して、現在も著名な作品として定着しえたのかが、解明できる。
