Outline of Research at the Start	ハーマン・メルヴィルの作品は過去のマニエリスム美学との関連から考察されることもあるが、本研究ではその逆方向をとり、後期の小説と詩の実験的手法の由来と実践をつぶさに検討することを通して、メルヴィルを19世紀中葉のアメリカ・ロマン主義文学と20世紀のモダニズムを架橋する、いわば「プロト・モダニスト」として位置付ける。アメリカ文学史はとかく南北戦争（1861～65年）以前・以後で分断的に捉えられがちだが、本研究を通して、メルヴィルの後期作品とモダニズムとの近接を明らかにすることにより、アメリカ文学におけるロマンティシズムからモダニズムへの連続性を例証することができるだろう。
