文学作品は、国や人種、階級、セクシュアリティ、宗教などの外面的な状況のはざまに苦しむ社会的・精神的疎外者に度々目を向けてきた。本研究は、George Eliot、Thomas Hardy、George Gissingを始めとする19世紀中後期の作家の作品における移動や越境が、社会的束縛や障壁から解放されるための手段ではなく、境界線上の彷徨いを目的とする行為であることを立証し、ポストコロニアル批評を始めとする文芸批評がこれまで拾いきれなかった19世紀イギリス文学作品が奥底に包有する一面を明らかにするものである。
