Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、新たに発見された出版社のハーディ宛書簡とハーディの返信の控えを解読し、両者のやりとりを踏まえながら、 『貴婦人たちの物語』(初出1890年)の生成過程を解明するものである。 研究者の間には、ハーディが小説執筆時に出版社の検閲を受け、性的な挿話・表現の多く を削除・修正せざるをえなかったという言説が広く流布しているが、本研究では、書簡と 『貴婦人たちの物語』の原稿および活字テクストを精査することにより、従来の説には解消 されえない、出版社への抵抗とも言うべきハーディの改稿に光を当てようとする試みである。
