Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、日系アメリカ作家カレン・テイ・ヤマシタの作品を中心に、日系および日本に連関する英語圏の作家の作品における閉塞的空間（ホテル、監獄、キャンプ、共同体、村、島等）のモチーフを分析する。そしてアメリカ文学では周縁化され、被害言説で語られる傾向にある日系性が、これらの作家の作品では帝国主義的資質を示している構造を証明する。具体的にはアメリカ国内では第二次世界大戦における原爆や日系収容所といった迫害の集団的記憶、そしてそれに基づく被害者意識によってとらえられがちな日系性というエスニシティが、これとは対極の諸相を示唆していることを指摘し、既存のアメリカ文学研究に一石を投ずるものである。
