Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、ベビー・ブーム期における正典的なアメリカ小説群を取り上げ、それらのなかでいかに子供の登場人物の人数設定が男性性イメージの構築に関連していたか、そしてそのことがどの程度同時代の社会政治的ムードと連動していたかを考察する。冷戦構造や消費社会の発展を下敷きとし、男性性の危機の時代と従来的に論じられてきた1950年代ごろにおいて、さまざまな作家が、それぞれの仕方で子供であるキャラクターの人口調整を示していた。その在り様や変遷を吟味することで、危機の論理のなかで見過ごされてきた当時の男性性をめぐる権力や抑圧を再吟味し、出生率と男性性をめぐる文化政治を照射することが本研究の最終的な狙いである。
