Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、20世紀初頭から冷戦体制確立前夜にかけての知識人のトランスナショナルな活動を調査し、それがアメリカ古典文学の形成に及ぼした影響を考察するものである。19世紀中葉のアメリカ文学は、近代化が進むアメリカにとっての「役立つ過去」としての位置付けを与えられたが、その際、批評家たちはイギリスに代表される西欧諸国のみならず、中南米や中欧・東欧に目を向け、それらの地域をアメリカと二重写しに捉えることーーいわば「翻訳」的に捉えることーーで文学史を確立しようとした。本研究は、文学史上の＜アメリカン・ルネサンス＞を＜トランス・アメリカン・ルネサンス＞として再定位する。
