Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、フランス十九世紀の小説家ギュスターヴ・フローベールの『ブヴァールとペキュシェ』を対象に、小説と知との関係を問い直す試みである。しばしば「百科全書的小説」とも形容されるこの未完の遺作は、二人の主人公が農学、医学から宗教学、教育学まで様々な知の領域を渉猟するという筋立てにより、同時代の諸科学に対して批判的な関係を切り結ぶとともに、小説の言語とアーカイブの関係という先鋭的な問題を提起している。フローベールが残した膨大な読書ノート、さらに作家が実際に読んだ書物にまでさかのぼって調査を行うことにより、文字通り無数の引用からなる小説作品の文学としての自律性とは何かという根源的な問いを検討する。
