Outline of Research at the Start

This research aims to clarify the connection between the glossing of cosmopolitan language texts and imitational borrowing in Japanese and the vernacular languages of Europe. Japanese glosses of Literary Sinitic texts and English, German and Irish glosses of Latin texts will be analyzed, both hands-on and through secondary sources, to collect examples of imitational borrowings such as loan translations, loan meanings, loan derivations and loan constructions. The borrowing strategies in each language will then be compared and contrasted to create a universal model of borrowing through glossing.
