Outline of Research at the Start	この研究で、日伊交流史の黎明期、特に1860-70年代の日本におけるイタリアの立場と役割を、両国で収集した未公刊史料から検証する。まず、本来の日本外交史研究により十分に扱われてこなかったこのテーマを中心とした学術専門書を日本語で執筆すると同時に、同テーマを軸にした展示会を大阪で開催する予定である。更に、1870-72年に来日し、蝦夷や東北地方を旅したイタリア公使館の若い書記官ウーゴ・ピサ（Ugo Pisa）による未刊回想録（手稿）を翻刻し、註釈を入れ、英訳する。これらの目的を達成するために、国内外で日伊交流史関連の新たな史料を発見する一方で、研究の成果を幅広く公開する予定である。
