Outline of Research at the Start	申請者はこれまでの在外資料調査により、欧米に漂民大黒屋光太夫（1783-1792ロシア滞留）関係資料をはじめ、知識人ネットワークによるロシア経由の日本情報関係資料が未調査のままが現存することを確認している。本研究は、これら未調査の18世紀末の在英史料を中心とした在外日本関係資料を精査することにより、外交交渉史、博物学史、地理学史の観点から多角的に英露の極東進出競争におけるイギリスの対日政策を解明し、18世紀末の鎖国日本を取り巻くグローバルな環境・背景を研究する。
