本研究は、イコノクラスムがビザンツ帝国内における単なる宗教政策・運動なのではなく、イスラーム世界や西ヨーロッパなどをも含む広範な地域で進展していた政治的・社会的・宗教的変化が背景にあること、そして古代末期から進展していた社会の変化のプロセスも影響していることを強く意識しながら、ビザンツ帝国やイスラームといった地理的枠組みを超えた、イコノクラスムの再評価・再検討を進め、地中海・中近東地域の古代から中世への長期的な変化のプロセスを明らかにしていくものである。
