Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、松前藩士・今井八九郎（1790-1862）が作成した蝦夷地の絵図（北方図）の全容把握を試みながら、その歴史的意義を明らかにしようとするものである。
東京国立博物館の「今井八九郎北方測量関係資料」が国の重要文化財に指定されていることに示されるように、今井八九郎がすぐれた測量師であったことは知られてきた。一方で、今井八九郎図が作成された目的や幕藩間で果たした役割など、同時代的な意義は注目されてこなかった。本研究では、海防問題が深刻化する19世紀特有の政治的課題をふまえながら、今井八九郎が松前藩士として作成した絵図の歴史的意義を明らかにしたい。
